Development of automatic disinfection scissors to prevention transfer of bacterial canker infection in tomato [Lycopersicon esculentum]

The transfer of bacterial canker infection of tomato via the scissors used to remove leaves or side buds has become a problem. To prevent this infection transfer, we developed scissors whose blades are automatically disinfected. The disinfection liquid is linked to the cutting operation by a nozzle installed in the base of the scissor blades and is automatically sprayed onto the blades. We found that 500 times liquid of 70% calcium hypochlorite was the most suitable disinfectant. When the scissors were used to remove tomato leaves, the disinfectant was effective in preventing the transfer of bacterial canker infection (as for the disinfection liquid 500 times liquid of 70% calcium hypochlorite use). These scissors were developed jointly with the Kioritz Corporation under the trade name of AWS-1 (Automatic Washing Scissors I) and have been in use since 2004.
