To produce seedless fruits of ' Tosa-buntan', the effect of the soft X-ray irradiation of 'Hyuganatsu' pollen, a pollinizer of ' Tosa-buntan', was examined. Soft X-ray irradiation of 'Hyuganatsu' pollen at 300 to 1,500Gy resulted in 'Tosa-buntan' fruits with no perfect seeds and only few imperfect seeds. Using a higher exposure of soft X-rays led to fewer imperfect seeds, a lower percentage of fruit set, and a smaller fruit size. Although the flesh percentage of fruit was decreased by soft X-ray irradiation, the edible percentage was not affected. Sugar content in juice was not affected by soft X-ray irradiation in plastic house cultivation, while it was decreased in open field cultivation. There was no consistent effect on the content of citric acid. Based on fruit set percentage, fruit size and the number of imperfect seeds, we conclude that soft X-ray irradiation at exposures from 500 to 750Gy was suitable for seedless fruit production in 'Tosa-buntan'.
