Disinfection of drinking water and evaluation of viability and egg production in the broiler hens using the weak acid hypochlorous solution

There is a growing importance of disinfection of drinking water to prevent spread of disease through drinking water in poultry farms. Weak acid hypochlorous solution is a diluted NaClO solution which is adjusted to pH 5.5 through 6.5 with HCl. This study was arranged to investigate the availability of the weak acid hypochorous solution as a disinfectant of drinking water. Broiler chicks (White Plymouth Rock hens ; 8,220 birds) were divided equally into two groups. An experiment group was given the weak acid hypochlorous solution, while a control group was given tap water from 1 week to 64 weeks of age. The concentration of available chlorine was 50 ppm at a water supply tank where the weak acid hypochlorous solution was added to the drinking water supply. The adequate amount of chlorine was kept at water supply bells where the hens drunk. The number of bacteria and fungi were evaluated at 3 different points in the water supply system. Salmonella spp. and coliform were not detected at any point in the water supply, and a small number of the other types of bacteria and fungi were found comparing with those in the tap water supply. The viability of the experiment group was significantly higher than that of the control group at early 24 weeks of feeding. It was suggested that the weak acid hypochlorous water is effective in preventing a spread of the gram-negative bacteria through the drinking water supply and not affected viability after 24 weeks of age and egg production.
