English. In the strategy of the European Union knowledge economy and knowledge society have been acknowledged on foundation of sustainable development and improvement of life quality. Concept of knowledge economy, also understanding about for development of useful knowledge obtaining and place of universities in this process in EU political documents have been adopted from works of society researchers at the end of the 20th century. Creating of knowledge society is connected with joined European higher education space, joined European science space; innovations - successes of knowledge commercialization.

Zināšanu ekonomikas jēdziena, arī izpratne par attīstībai noderīgu zināšanu ieguvi un universitāšu vietu šajā procesā ES politiskajos dokumentos ir aizgūta no 20. gs. beigu sabiedrības pētnieku darbiem. Zināšanu sabiedrības izveide tiek saistīta ar: vienotu Eiropas augstākās izglītības telpu; vienotu Eiropas zinātnes telpu; inovāciju (jauninājumu) - zināšanu komercializācijas panākumiem.
