The organic pollution of freshwaters in the Philippines is mainly due to domestic and agricultural wastes from the uplands. It is estimated that such wastes constitute 70% of the pollution of surface and underground waters. With the lack of adequate solid and liquid waste treatment systems in most upland areas of the country, there is a need for practical and economic strategies for addressing the worsening pollution of our freshwater due to population growth. Among the workable interventions that have been tested in developing countries for the rehabilitation of polluted freshwaters are the sewage-fed pond system and use of natural and constructed wetlands. The mitigation of pollution from domestic households and livestock farms can also be done by recycling the solid and liquid wastes for the production of fish and agricultural crops.
