Survey of alternate host plants of Asian corn borer [Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee)] in major corn production areas in the Philippines

Ocular field survey, actual field examination and dissection and farmers' survey (through designed questionnaire) were conducted to determine and identify the alternate host plants of Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee), the Asian corn borer (ACB) in three major corn production areas in the Philippines. The survey involved 702 farmer respondents, distributed in five municipalities per province, five barangays per municipality, 5 to 10 farmers per barangay. Results showed that the alternate crop hosts across the three provinces were yard-long bean or sitao (Vigna sesquipedalis), lady's finger or okra (Abelmoschus esculentus), cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum), tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum) and pepper (Capsicum annuum). The alternate weed hosts were itchgrass or aguigay (Rottboellia cochinchinensis), napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum), Job's tears or tigbi (Coix lacryma-jobi), paragrass (Brachiaria mutica) and wild sorghum (Sorghum halepense). Significantly more alternate hosts were found in South Cotabato and Bukidnon compared to Isabela. The most abundant weeds inside the cornfield and adjacent fields were itchgrass or aguigay, trilobed morning glory (Ipomoea triloba) and spiny amaranth (Amaranthus spinosus).
