Performance evaluation of the multi purpose solar tunnel dryer for fish drying

A multipurpose solar tunnel dryer (MPSTD), developed at the Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Hohenheim University in Germany, was tested primarily to determine its adaptability to Philippine conditions. This dryer was modified using marine plywood (Dryer 1) and GI sheet (Dryer 2) as heat collectors. The dryers were loaded with small fish (weighing 50-100 grams) and large fish (weighing 150-200 grams). Dryer 1, Dryer 2 and sundrying were compared and analyzed using two factorial in completely randomized design. The small and large fish using the modified MPSTD were dried in 9 and 12 hr, respectively. The rate of drying small fish was recorded at 3.64, 3.39 and 2.13 g/hr using Dryer 1, Dryer 2 and sundrying, respectively. On the other hand, rate of drying of large fish using Dryer 1 and Dryer 2 and sundrying was computed at 8.30, 7.66 and 5.53 g/hr, respectively. Final moisture content (wet basis) of small fish samples dried using Dryer 1, Dryer 2 and sundrying was recorded at 15.16, 16.13, and 18.58 percent, respectively. On the other hand, large fish samples dried using Dryer 1, Dryer 2 and sundrying had a moisture content of 19.21, 19.71 and 21.63 percent, respectively. Result showed that Dryer 1 gave the highest drying efficiency with a mean of 89.98 percent. Dryer 2 followed then sundrying with a mean of 87.52 and 59.11 percent, respectively. Findings revealed that marine plywood (Dryer 1) could be used as a heat collector material for the MPSTD. The benefit cost ratio of using the MPSTD is 1.76.
