The International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP) has established the Musa Germplasm Information System (MGIS) as a system for the exchange of germplasm data. MGIS is a database containing detailed and standardized information on the accessions stored in different Musa gene banks around the world. Analysis of data in MGIS can allow duplicate or unique materials in conservation to be identified and can help to highlight classification problems and gaps in data. Furthermore, MGIS provides an inventory of ex-situ Musa collections and related research results (taxonomic descriptions, agronomic performances of varieties in various environments, molecular characterization disease resistance, health status, origin and environment in collecting sites, etc.). The MGIS can also be used in association with the geographic information systems (GIS) to produce maps illustrating the distribution of Musa diversity. MGIS is based on a network of gene bank curators who have the primary responsibility for entering data in MGIS. INIBAP compiles, verifies and diffuses on CD-ROM and via the MGIS website the information provided by the curators. MGIS provides a valuable resource for reseachers who can use it to identify the most appropriate germplasm to be used in their experiments and breeding programs. All data in MGIS remains the property of the gene bank curators.
