Control of golden apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck) in Taiwan

The golden apple snail (GAS), Pomacea canaliculata, and two other related pest snails of lowland rice were introduced to Taiwan illegally for food. When rejected by consumers, GAS was discarded and dispersed in the fields, which led to severe damage in rice, as no native biological control organisms were present. Although physically destroying the egg masses is effective, the main control measure is by applying metaldehyde or triphenyltin acetate (TPTA) in the infested field at the rice seedling stage. An annual expenditure of US1 million on molluscicides to control 100,00 has was made during 1982-1990. Metaldehyde can be used in both rice fields and water ways at high temperature, while TPTA usage was restricted to rice fields due to its high toxicity to fish. TPTA was banned from agricultural usage in 1997, and the subsequently registered niclosamide does not provide as good GAS control as TPTA. Without a good molluscicide, GAS has b ecome an agricultural problem again. GAS control and molluscicide evaluation are discussed. Suggestions are made for conducting a special review of TPTA, funding fundamental studies of GAS, and establishing a national GAS control program.
