Protective structures for high value vegetable production in containers as an approach to urban agriculture is a technology commercialization project intended to promote the use of protective structures and covers in growing high value vegetables in containers in the lowland areas of CALABARZON and demonstrate their growth and yield performance in an urban setting. Combinations of 'Lollo Rosa', 'Romaine', 'Green Span' and 'President' were grown separately in containers under a high tunnel, with polyethylene cover during wet season and nylon net during dry season, in three different locations namely Batangas, Laguna and Cavite. The structures were established on a concrete flooring to emphasize the possibility of soilless vegetable production. Provided with proper cultural management practices, the set-ups were closely monitored for the occurrence of pests, temperature, relative humidity, light intensity and yield as well as the degree of impact of the technology to the different areas where the structures were established. Although, the authors have observed a few pests on the crops, no preventive measures were implemented since the effects were very minimal. They also observed that the growth and yield performance of lettuce varied in terms of the locations where the authors have established their set-ups. The yield of the crop was highly affected by temperature, light intensity and relative humidity as well as the occurrence of typhoons, particularly 'Reming' and 'Milenyo'. So far, several groups have shown interest in putting-up a similar structure in their respective communities and although the project is still in its initial stage, the response of the people to it indicates that container gardening of high value vegetables under protective structure in an urban setting is possible.
