Golden Rice (GR) is genetically engineered rice that contains significant amount of beta-carotene and carotenoids, precursors to vitamin A which is an essential human micronutrient not intrinsically present in polished rice. Introgressed into elite Asian rice varieties, GR is expected to be successfully deployed in the Philippines and other Asian countries in the next five years to complement existing solutions to the public health problem of Vitamin A deficiency (VAD). Latest Philippine National Nutrition Survey data show that 40% of 6 months to 5 years old children and 20% of lactating women have VAD(FNRI,2006). Part of the deployment is the conduct of effective communication strategy to create significant demand among targeted GR consumers (women and children) as well as attract farmers to produce GR. Initial survey is being carried out among key stakeholders to answer the following questions: What do stakeholders know about GR? What are their views about the role of GR in addressing VAD? Where do they obtain nutrition related information and what kind of information do they get? What other information on GR they need and whom do they trust to get them? Sample respondents were chosen from among government and non-government nutrition workers, national and local media personalities, local government officials and personnel, local nutrition council members, key leaders of women and farmers organizations, pre-school and elementary school teachers, barangay [village] nutrition scholars, academe, and scientists. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and appropriate statistical test. Results will be used to identify GR communication needs and focus the deployment campaign.
