Prevalence of canine babesiosis in district Lahore and comparative efficacy of different drugs against naturally infected dogs with babesiosis

The present study was conducted to study the prevalence of disease in dogs brought to the Dog Hospital, College of Veterinary Sciences Lahore, Disease Investigation Section of Veterinary Research Institute, Lahore and same other private clinics. The effect on blood parameters and disease response to three anti-protozoal drugs (Lomidine, Imizol and Diminazene) on the recovery and health of the animal was noticed. Out of 137 patients studied 28 dogs were found positive for babesiosis through blood smear examination. These positive patients were then divided into four equal groups A, B, C and D. Different blood parameters were checked before and after the treatment. Animals of group `A' were treated with Lomidine (Pentamidine methunsulphate) @ 2-5 mg/kg body weight, animals of group `B' were treated with Imizol (Imidocarb dipropionate) aceturate @ 2 mg/kg body weight and animals of group `C' were treated with Diminazene (Diminazene di aceturate) @ 5-7 mg/kg body weight while the fourth group `D' was kept control and no treatment was given. Efficacy of tire drugs was detected by the reversion of clinical signs blood parameters and negative blood smear slide. Overall prevalence of disease in district Lahore was calculated, which is 20% Lomidine gave best results while Imizol stood second and Diminazene came third in efficacy against babesia in Dogs. It was also found that there is close relationship of the ticks in spreading the disease and patients suffering from tick infestation and consistent pyrexia are normally the suspected case to be considered for babesiosis.
