Diversity of begomoviruses in Pakistan

Begomoviruses (family Geminiviridae) are responsible for many economically important crop diseases worldwide. The majority of these diseases are caused by bipartite begomoviruses, although a rapidly growing number of diseases of the Old World are associated with monopartite begomovirus infections. With a few exceptions, these are caused by a monopartite begomovirus in association with a recently discovered essential satellite component, DNA-beta. These begomovirus/satellite disease complexes are widespread, diverse, and collectively infect a wide variety of crops, weeds and ornamental plants. The diversity of begomoviruses on the Indian sub-continent is high, with all three types of begomoviruses (bipartite, monopartite and monopartite-DNA beta requiring) present. At this time there are rapid changes occurring in the populations of geminiviruses due to co-infections resulting in recombination and changing agricultural practices. The present situation with begomoviruses in Pakistan as well changes to the populations of these viruses that have occurred recently and the likely causes thereof will be discussed.
