Collaboration is often viewed as a good thing , so most international organizations actively promote research partnerships. Often, the challenges faced by academic departments and research institutions when trying to measure the impact of working with partners are: how best should the impact of a research partnership be assessed, and what factors hinder effective collaboration among partners For the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), undertaking research in collaboration with partners remains a key principle in seeking to influence policies and public opinion. Based on data from 200 research partners from 38 countries, this study examines the role of CIFOR s collaborative research, from the partners viewpoint. The study attempts to outline how networking, capacity building and acting as an intermediary among partners can have beneficial outcomes for (or impacts on) those partners. The responses from partners show that they perceive collaborative research on forests and people as being successful. They attribute this to strong and strategic vision, and shared leadership that purposely seeks to create collaborative advantage. The study concludes that collaborative research plays a crucial role in establishing networks and thereby helps to achieve wider dissemination of research findings and their implications.
