Incidence of boar taint in the shoulder backfat of young boars, barrows and gilts hybrids of Polish Large White and Polish Landrace breeds

In this study 114 pigs were examined: 64 boars, 25 barrows and 25 gilts, hybrids of Polish Large White x Polish Landrance breeds. Carcass meatness and intensity of undesirable boar taint were determined. Boar carcasses demonstrated better meatness than those of gilts and barrows. On the other hand, the intensity of taint in boar shoulder backfat was higher than that in barrows and gilts. The intensity of boars' taint in the adipose fat of barrows and gilts was not at a level that could result in carcass disqualification. In boars, the risk of carcass disqualification due to undesirable fat taint was very low and pertained to 2 percent individuals only
