The effect of different plant covers (nonwoven PP, perforated PE film with 64 holes 6 cm in diameter per square m, and low PE tunnel) and soil mulching with black PE film on the soil temperature and the yield of celery Tango was investigated in 2003 and 2004. Celery transplants were set out in the third 10 days of April and harvested in the first 10 days of July. All covers except black PE film caused the increase in soil temperature by 1.0 deg C on average. The highest yield - 7.4 kg/square m, was obtained in the case of perforated PE film applied as a direct cover in the first period of growth and then as a mulch. Chemical composition depended more on the wheater conditions than on the kind of cover
