Biological progress in pea and faba bean breeding and cultivation

In 1971-2006 35 cultivars of faba bean, 69 of edible pea and 42 cultivars of fodder pea were registered into state cultivar register. The highest register activity over this period was observed in edible pea and lowest - in faba bean. Most cultivars remained listed in the register no more than 10 years. The average life cycle of edible pea cultivars did not exceed 8 years, whereas of faba bean and fodder pea - exceeded 9 years. Karat of edible pea, Fidelia of fodder pea and Nadwislanski of faba bean cultivars remained entered into the register for the longest period. A decreasing number of legume breeder stations or institutions can limit a number of new cultivars of this still underestimated plant group in Poland in the future and make the legume breeding program in Poland margin
