This is a report of the proceedings of a regional workshop held on 1113 November 1997, to take stock of the current situation in sub-Saharan Africa with respect to genetic resources of cassava, sweetpotato and yam. Country reports highlighting the factors contributing to genetic erosion of cassava, yam and sweetpotato in the wild, in farmers fields and in field genebanks are presented. Strategies for collection, conservation, characterization and use, including ex situ, in situ and farmer participatory approaches, and the use of molecular techniques for assessment of diversity were also considered. The concept of regional approaches to conservation and use of root crop genetic resources was endorsed. Regional root crop improvement and genetic resource networks under the auspices of regional organizations such as the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in East and Central Africa (ASARECA), the Southern African Centre for Cooperation in Agricultural Research (SACCAR), and the Conference of Directors of Agronomic Research in West and Central Africa (CORAF) was envisages. The desire for a root crop improvement network in West Africa, and the strengthening of linkages among the regional root crop improvement organizations and genebanks in SSA were also recognized.
