Morphological and agronomical characterization of native black mulberry (Morus nigra L.) in Sutculer, Turkey

This study was conducted to select useful genotypes from the extant genetic resources of black mulberry (Morus nigra L.) in Sutculer County in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. Populations of native black mulberry were surveyed, and 10 black mulberry genotypes were evaluated with respect to some fruit and tree characters. The harvesting period was between the first week of June and September. The leaf shapes of all genotypes were unlobed, dentate, cordate and dark-green. The ranges of average fruit weight, fruit diameter, fruit length, soluble solids and acidity were 3.114.49 g, 15.3416.29 mm, 22.3325.15 mm, 13.9118.36% and 1.241.64%, respectively. The vitamin C content was determined by HPLC. In general, most of the genotypes had attractive medium to large, blackpurple fruits. Some of the genotypes were considered promising for future breeding efforts
