This publication is the outcome of the international workshop held in Zschortau, Germany organized to promote the development of the East African Network on Plant Genetic Resources (EAPGREN). The workshop aimed to contribute towards strengthening the national level political and institutional frameworks for the effective and sustainable use, exchange and conservation of plant genetic resources (PGR) within the countries of East Africa. Papers were presented on national institutional frameworks for conservation of plant genetic resources; national programme development activities in Germany; regional institutional frameworks; the importance of regional networks in the conservation and use of plant genetic resources; EAPGREN case study; SWOT as a method for systematic analysis and planning in national and regional PGR frameworks; international frameworks for conservation of plant genetic resources and managing agrobiodiversity in rural areas. Country reports were presented on Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda
