Home garden systems in Ghana and their contribution to germplasm flows

Home gardens occur in most parts of Ghana and are of immediate use to household members for food and health requirements. Home gardens are generally multi-storied and multi-purpose. Informal discussion with farmers, interviews and structured questionnaire methods were used to gain information on home gardens in four agro-ecological zones in Ghana. Home gardens ranged in size from 0.1 to 1.0 ha. In terms of structure, home gardens were found to be multi-storied, usually with three or four layers. Species diversity varied among the different agro-ecological zones in the study. There was a flow of germplasm among gardens, farms, local markets, research institutes and natural ecosystems
