It is estimated that all quantity of fosil fuel used by human population in one year, equivalent of organic matter contain 44 x 10**12 tons of carbon, is 400 times more than biological production of organic matter at planet. This fact caused fast improvement of biofuel production and its use as alternative source of energy. In that way, dependance of fosil carbonhydrogens and carbon emission is reduced. Almost all EU members and most of countries in transition process, significantly increased production of biofuel (especially biodiesel and ethanol) in last ten years. This trend will continue in future, according to EU Directive No. EC/30/2003. This directive is obligative for all EU members, but also for future members, with dynamic compatibile with their own abilities. Present situation in production and use of bioethanol as fuel, as well as perspectives of future use of biomass in Serbia and in the world, is shown in this paper.
