An analysis of heterotic potential for agronomically important traits in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Using our own results and findings made by the NS sunflower team (Serbia) and various other researchers worldwide, we discuss in the present paper the achievements of sunflower breeding with special focus on: the effort to increase average sunflower yield to over 4 t/ha based on the manifestation of heterosis and mode of inheritance of certain traits; the increase of stability and adaptability of newly developed sunflower hybrids, and the identification of limiting factors in sunflower production and their elimination by the use of modern findings on sunflower genetics and breeding.
