The programme on maize breeding for resistance to phytopathogenic fungi was established at the Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje, Belgrade - Zemun, during the 1960s when these fungi caused great losses to maize, which was the most important field crop in Serbia. Since then, the programme has been developing and evolving into a very modern programme. Today this programme encompasses comprehensive studies on pathogens, aetiology of diseases, resistance of genetically different breeding material, modes of inheritance of resistance and development of resistant genotypes or reselection elite susceptible genotypes to economically important pathogens, as well as, the development or the elaboration of existing methods in these studies. The development of resistant genotypes or the improvement of resistance to northern corn leaf blight, stalk and ear rot, as well as, to maize dwarf mosaic virus are the priorities in the studies. In recent times, the programme of comprehensive studies on toxigenic species (Fusarium spp.) and natural contamination of maize with mycotoxins has been developing with the aim to reduce the presence of fusariotoxins in maize grain.
