The role of boron in vegetable production

Boron (B) is an essential micronutrient. Of all essential micronutrients, B deficiency is most widespread. Boron is essential for meristem development and for metabolism of sugars in the plant. On most vegetables, average B content is between 20 and 100 ppm. Boron deficiency is more likely to occur at soil pH above 6.2, especially on sandy soils following periods of high rainfall and/or rapid growth. Boron is of particular importance for broccoli, celery, cauliflower. Symptoms of B deficiency are leaf chlorosis and necrosis, brittle leaves and stems, breaking of the midrib, reduced number of flowers, brown spots and cavities on fruits.
