Water pollution from livestock production is usually caused by leaching, minerals running off from the soil surface, slurry seepage in deep layers or by the direct discharge into water flows. Excess nutrients of animal manure can run off into surface or soil waters. Nitrogen and phosphorus are two nutrients of the fundamental importance in agriculture, but their pollution potential is the highest. The air in livestock buildings contains over hundred gas compounds, especially ammonia and those with unpleasant odour. All these gases are emitted into the surrounding. Methane and CO2 emissions are important in relation to global warming. Emissions of H2S and CO from underground slurry storages could provoke death incidences in animal buildings.
