Effect of spacing on growth and yield of "Albeely" and "Grand Nain" banana (Musa AAA) cultivars

This study was conducted during the period from September 2004 to July at Maringan along the west bank of the Blue Nile, Wad Medani, Gezira State, Sudan to detem1ine the effect of plant spacing on growth, crop earliness, yield and yield components of the newly released banana cultivars "Albeely" and "Grand Nain". Each cultivars was planted at five different spacings (3x4, 3x3.5, 3x3, 3x2.5 and 3x2 m) giving plant population of 840, 960, 1120, 1344 and1680 plants per hectare, respectively. The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications and four plants per replicate. In the first experiment spacing had no significant effect on plant height, pseudostem girth, crop earliness, yield and yield components of the plant crop of the banana cultivar "Albeely". However, spacing had significant effect on these parameters in the first ratoon crop of "Albeely". The best vegetative growth and yield parameters were obtained at spacing of 3x3.5 m. In the second experiment spacing had no effect on plant height, pseudostem girth, crop earliness, yield and yield component of the plant crop of the banana cultivar Grand Nain. In the first ratoon of this cultivar, plant height, pseudostem girth and number of hands per bunch were comparable on the different treatments. However, significant variations were found in crop cycle, number of fingers per hand, number of fingers per bunch, finger length, finger circumference and yield. The highest growth and yield were obtained on the banana cultivar "Grand Nain" planted at a spacing of 3x3 m
