Huettel and Yaaegashi (1988) separated R. similis from R. citrophilus on the basis of several minor morphological characteristics, which were used in combination with cytological differences (n = 4 vs n = 5 Huettel and Dickson, 1981) and differences in isozyme pattern (Huettel et al, 1983 a, b). However recently, Elbadri et al. (1998, 1999a, b) and Valette et al. (1998) found these characters overlap between and within populations. Accordingly, R. citrophilus was synonymised with R. similis. The former morphological studies were based upon female lip region and number of annules flanking the vulval area plus the number of papilla-like projections on the cloacal aperture of the males. Similarly, also Valette et al. (1998) studied male lip region from two R. similis populations from Guinee-Bissau and from Ivory Coast. In this study, we are comparing differences between male lip region in R. similis populations collected from world wide host range with very wide geographical distribution
