White mold (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) is present in all soybean-growing regions in the world. In Serbia, white mold is most harmful in years with frequent and abundant rainfall in the summer. In some field, more than 50% of plants are infected, causing significant yield reductions. Symptoms occur on all aboveground plant parts, in the form of thick, white, soft mycelium. The infected plant parts rot, the infected plants wilt and dry up. S. sclerotiorum is polyphagous. The fungus survive by sclerotia, which remain vital in the soil for several years. They germinate and give rise to the mycelium. Alternatively, under favourable weather conditions, bowl-shaped fruitbodies (apothecia) form on the sclerotia. Soybean plants are infected by asci and ascospores, which are formed in apothecia. Long-term crop rotation is the most effective means of disease control.
