Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora, the causal agent of stem canker, is widely distributed in most soybean-growing regions in the world. In Serbia it was first found in 1980 and since then its spread was rapid and intensive. It is counted among major soybean diseases. Infection may occur already at the beginning of pod forming. According to our results, yield may be reduced from 9 to 62%, depending of time of infection and sensitivity of the cultivar. Disease symptoms are exibited in the form of plants wilting and drying. Most typical symptoms are brown-black spots that occur on soybean stems. The fungus overwinters in harvest residues and seeds. Perithecia with asci and ascospores form on harvest residues in the spring. Ascospores cause infection in the course of growing season. Stem canker is controlled by combined cultivation practices and chemical treatments. In our country fungicides are not needed for successful control of the disease.
