Bacterial diseases of potato are of less importance in Serbia, compared to viral or fungal ones. However, diseases caused by bacteria of the genus Erwinia may cause significant damage to potato crops in some occasion. In some potato cultivars, when the spring is wet and cold from planting to emergence, the potato blackleg disease may appear at a great incidence and cause major damage in potato production. Cutting and planting of seed tubers right after cutting will result in a high percentage of diseased plants. When potato blackleg occurs, the proportion of infected plants is around 1%. When the conditions for germination and emergence are unfavourable, however, this percentage may become higher (up to 5%). More plants will be infected in conditions unfavourable for emergence, when ungerminated and freshly cut tubers are planted, and when susceptible cultivars are used.
