Staying alive - insight into the resistance mechanism of Conyza canadensis to xenobiotic paraquat

This paper summarizes the results of our earlier physiological-biochemical and recent gene expression studies on paraquat resistance. Examinations of gene expression in response to Pq revealed upregulation of four expressed sequence tags (ESTs). Two of them exhibited enhanced expression in both susceptible and paraquat-resistant biotypes. Complete sequence of one of these, the Ferr2 gene of horseweed has been determined, while the other one, a Myb factor is only partially sequenced. These genes probably play a role in Pq induced general stress response reactions. The upregulation of the other two ESTs was far greater in paraquat-resistant biotype than in susceptible biotype. One of them, CAT4, is a trasporter of cationic amino acids and polyamines. The other upregulated gene is similar to the membrane localised subunit of vascular H+ - ATPase from A. thaliana (L.) Heynth. These transporters can take part in the vacuolar transport of PQ and in the energy supply of transport.
