The influence of liming on the floristic composition of weed community in barley was explored in this work. The investigation was conducted on the experimental field of the Small Grains Research Institute in Kragujevac, Serbia, over a three-year period (1999/2000-2001/2002). The soil was extremely acid. Two winter barley cultivars (Jagodinac and NS-519) were tested. The investigation aimed to examine the effect of the applied fertilizers on crop weediness, and changes in the floristic composition of weed community. Acidophilic weeds as indicators of high soil acidity were registered on the acid soils. The presence of species that mainly resist soil activity and species without high-nutrient requirements were noted, too. Changes in the chemical characteristics of soil, caused by fertilizers, provoked changes in the floristic composition of weed community. In the variants involving liming and fertilizers, acidophilic weeds disappeared, but weed species which need higher soil pH and soil well-provided with nutrients appeared. Liming decreased weedness of small grains by 57,6% in barley. Weed numbers were lowest in the NPK + lime fertilizer + manure variants.
