Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) is an invasive weed and a troublesome species whose pollen causes allergies in humans. It multiplies by seeds and their germination depends on a number of factors. The investigation presented in this paper was done with seeds of two common ragweed populations, which were stored at room temperature after collection. Seed germination and seedling growth (elongation and weight increase) were studied in six different combinations of light, temperature and previous seed exposure to low temperature (4 deg C). Based on the results obtained, we concluded that germination was better in all treatments that included seed irradiation in the dark, while seedling growth was more intensive in treatments with seeds exposed for 24 h to 4 deg C temperature before testing.
