The aim of this publication is to identify and characterise the population size, the properties of endangered breeds of farm animals and their preconditions for their future sustainable development in Slovakia. It is not simple to determine which risk factors considerably influence the breeds in Slovakia and that these are becoming from the point of the size of their purebred populations an endangered breeds. The categorisation or respectively the characterising of the breeds under the risk is proposing a new point of view for these populations. This results in the fact that some of the breeders farming in a very strong competitive conditions are starting to lose an interest to breed endangered breeds in the present. The changes of conditions in production and a considerably high competitiveness of the individual breeds create risks which negatively influence economic results and survival of farm animal breeds. 11 endangered breeds of farm animals bred in Slovakia under threat of their future existence, in this publication were characterized. From the point of view of their actual status can be included to this category Slovak Pinzgau breed, breed of hens Oravka, Slovak White Goose, Carniolan rase of honeybee, Valachian sheep, horse breeds Furioso, Nonius, Norik of Muran type, Lipican and Hucul.
