The Slovak Phytophthora infestans population has been monitored since 1996, with primary focus to physiological race determination, metalaxyl resistance and mating types. Virulence characteristics have been monitored in order to identify races for use in breeding potatoes resistant to P. infestans. Changes in late blight population were confirmed. The occurrence of isolates with R2, R5, R9 and R11 virulence factors was noted neither in 1996 nor in 1997, and tested isolates had maximum six virulence genes. Since 1999, the occurrence of isolates with seven, eight and even ten R-genes has been recorded. Evident tendency in moving up to more complex races can be seen. It is likely that problems concerning more aggressive new pathogen may appear also in our potato-growing area.
