Toxinogenic filamentous fungi from agricultural commodities invetigated in Slovakia during 2002-2004

The present study reports on the capability of microscopic filamentous fungi of Slovak origin to produce significant fungal toxic metabolites in vitro. A total of nine hundred and eighty three fungal strains belonging to the genera Aspergillus, Fusarium and Penicillium recovered from various agricultural commodities investigated in Slovakia over 2002-2004 were tested for their ability to produce toxic extrolites-mycotoxins. Of them, five hundred and ninety three (60%) appeared to be toxinogenic for the following mycotoxins: aflatoxin B1 (3 strains out of 331), citrinin (65/81), cyclopiazonic acid (146/146), fumonisin B1 (95/95), griseofulvin (80/83), moniliformin (26/50), ochratoxin A (19/27), patulin (97/108), penitrem A (45/45), and sterigmatocystin (17/17). The 100% toxinogenity was observed in the potential producers of cyclopiazonic acid, fumonisin B1, penitrem A and sterigmatocystin, while the aflatoxin was detected only in 1% of the potential aflatoxin B1, producers screened here.
