Effect of infection with Fusarium culmorum (W. G. Smith) Sacc. on deoxynivalenol content in kernels and on yield traits of registered winter wheat cultivars

The aim of the work was to evaluate the effect of point inoculation with Fusarium culmorum on yield traits and deoxynivalenol content in grain of 39 registered winter wheat cultivars in the 2004 and 2005 years. The average deoxynivalenol content in the grains of tested cultivars was 234.3 mg per kg (2004) and 96.2 mg per kg (2005). The high differences in deoxynivalenol content were probably due to weather conditions during the whole period of disease development. In the year 2004 (June 10 - July 29), the mean temperature was 18.7 degree C and rainfall 73.6 mm, in 2005 (June 13 – July 5) it was 21.5 degree C and 25.5 mm. The average DON contents were the highest in cultivars Alana, Axis, Elpa, Estica, Eva, and the lowest ones in Alka, Malyska, Sana, and Zerda. The correlation coefficients were highly significant between deoxynivalenol content on the one hand and between fusarium head light rating and damaged kernels, on the other hand, in both years. In addition, correlations between deoxynivalenol content and yield traits (thousand kernel weight, kernel weight per spike, number of kernels per spike) were statistically highly significant, too.
