Effects of shading and the level of irrigation on KClO3 treated longan trees on off season flowering and on physiological changes

Effects of shading and irrigation levels on KClO3 treated pot grown longan trees was investigated. The 1 1/2 year old longan trees cultivar E-Daw were applied with 1 g of KClO3 per at the begining of the experiment. A 2x3 factorial in CRD were applied. The first factor was the levels of irrigation: sufficient amount (replaced the amount lost by evapotranspirtion) and excess amount (3 times more than the amount lost). The second factor was the levels of shading: 0, 50 and 90 percent shading. The results showed that longan trees received excess irrigation rate flowered 1.75 time less than the ones with sufficient rate. The non shaded and the 50 percent shaded trees flowered 4.5 and 5.5 times more than the 90 percent shaded ones. Further more, shading delayed flowering. There was no interaction between the two factors studied. In the physiological study, the levels of irrigation had no effects on leaf water potential, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate. However, the 90 percent shading reduced photosynthetic rate significantly.
