Royal project Foundation started to support the Research and Development Project of Highland Legumes in 1985 when the project on production of seed legumes (particularly soybean and red kidney bean) in the highlands to replace opium based agriculture funded by ARS/USDA was closed to terminate. Since that time, cultivars and advanced breeding lines of red kidney bean, navy bean, pinto bean and azuki bean have been developed through introduction, selection, yield trails and mutation breeding. Until the present time, there are altogether one cultivar Mok Cham and 18 advanced breeding lines of red kidney bean, 4 cultivars Pang Da 1, 2, 3 and 4 of nave bean, 4 advanced breeding lines of pinto bean, and one cultivar Erimo of Azuki bean. Seeds of these cultivars and advanced breeding lines are maintained at the Royal Pang Da Station in Samoeng, Chiang Mai.
