Chemical Composition and Nutritive Value of Birdsfoot Trefoil in Mixtures with Perennial Meadow Grasses

During the 20022005 period in the experimental field of RIMSA Troyan a field trial was carried out to determine chemical composition and nutritive value of birdsfoot trefoil grown together with meadow grasses. Pure stand of birdsfoot trefoil and its mixtures with tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, timothy, smooth bromegrass, meadow fescue, cocksfoot, red fescue and wheatgrass were compared. On average for the four-year period, the highest content of crude protein and calcium was obtained from birdsfoot trefoil and timothy grown together (166.2 g/kgand 1.44 g/kg) and the lowest one from the mixture of birdsfoot trefoil and wheatgrass (134.5 g/kg). The mixture of birdsfoot trefoil and red fescue had the lowest percentage of crude fiber (253.0 g/kg) and crude fat (19.9 g/kg). Phosphorus quantity in the mixture of birdsfoot trefoil with tall fescue was greater than that in the control. The mixture of birdsfoot trefoil with timothy had the highest values of crude protein, feed units, feed units for milk and growth.
