Inheritance of fiber length and lint percentage in male sterility based F1 cotton hybrids

In the present study the inheritance of fiber length and lint percentage was estimated for 35 cytoplasmic genetic male sterility based cotton hybrids involving five male sterile lines and seven pollinators, six of G. hirsutum L. and one of G. barbadense L. The experiment was carried out in 2005 and 2006 at the Cotton and Durum Wheat Research Institute in Chirpan. The fiber length was inherited dominantly and overdominantly to the higher parent, while the fiber lint percentage was inherited fully and partially dominantly to the lower parent, in some cases with negative overdominance. Low heterotic effect for the fiber length was observed. The parental genotypes and their combining ability were of great importance for creating of hybrids having long fiber and high lint percentage. Three cytoplasmatic male sterile lines had positive GCA for the fiber length and negative for the lint percentage, and one (A-21) had positive GCA for lint percentage and negative for the fiber length. Of the male parents, the line 361 and the variety Giza-77 had positive GCA for the fiber length only, while the variety Millenium and the line T-3 proved to be with high GCA effects for both traits. The cross combinations A-21 x Millenium and A-21 x T-3 were found desirable for both traits.
