Milk recording: quality assurance for milk meters

The International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR) and the Association of Swiss Cattle Breeders (ASR) make high demands of the milk meters approved by them for milk recording in terms of material safety, operational reliability, accurate quantity measurement, sampling to determine fat and protein content, and milk quality. Both portable and permanently installed milk meters must be checked annually by an accredited testing centre. The introduction of a quality-assurance plan for milk meters as of 1st January 2006 represents a major step forward towards the improvement of the quality of milk recording. In this context, the research station Agroscope Reckenholz-Taenikon ART plays a leading role in elaborating the guidelines for the annual milk-meter checks, and in supervising the inspection services.
