A production system with seasonal outdoor rearing of pigs can be designed to be environmentally compatible with properly planned crop rotation. An extended crop rotation of 6 _ 7 years avoids damage to the soil, reduces parasite pressure and also permits the cultivation of grain legumes. It is possible to obtain an equalized nitrogen balance by producing the farm’s own protein-rich forage components. The practical implementation of the production system presented makes high demands on farm management. It permits fattening yields of 650g/day and area productivity of 800 _ 1000 kg increase per ha.
