Productivity, growth characters and nutritive value of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) under different regimes of cutting and nitrogen application

This study was carried out in calcareous soil of Mariout Research Station, Desert Research Center (D.RC) during the two successive growing seasons of 2002 /2003 and 2003/2004 to investigate the response of ryegrass plants to three regimes of N application (80 kg N/fed. as single dose after full germination, splitting this amount into two equal doses applied after full germination and after the first cut, added as one dose after the first cut), three times of beginning cutting (after 60, 70 and 80 days from sowing). Data obtained indicated that: 1- Applied N fertilization as a single dose after full germination led to an increase in succulence degree and crude fiber percent. , flag leaf area, specific leaf weight as well as fresh and dry forage yields were increased by splitting N dose into two equal parts. Whereas, adding the whole N fertilizer dose after the first cut resulted in an increase, in plant height, No. of tillers, DM percent and tot al ash percent 2- The earliest cutting (after 60 days from sowing) led to an increase in swculence degree and protein content of ryegrass plants. The highest values of both fresh and dry forage yields were obtained when ryegrass plants were cart K 70 days from sowing. Whereas, cutting ryegrass plants after 80 days fibm sowing produce an increase in plant height, No. of tillers, DM percent, specific leaf weight, crude fiber and total ash content. 3- The interaction between the two main factor under study had no significant pert on the studied growth parameters, forage yield and chemical cow6tuents of ryegrass plants.
