Abdel-Muein, Nadya M.
The present study aims to investigate the effect of petroleum ether and ethanolic extract of Teucrium polium L. aerial parts on rat growth, some blood and liver constituents and transaminases activities of diabetic rats. In diabetic rats, treatment in ethanolic extract case (800 mg /kg b.w.) caused significant (P0.01) changes in all studied parameters. Ethanolic extract of Teucrium polium L. treatment in diabetic rats induced significant (P0.01) increase in rat body gain weight and the rats had the highest feed efficiency ratio compared with diabetic rats control. In addition, this extract caused significant (P0.01) depression of blood glucose level, total lipid content, total cholesterol, total triglycerides, total uric acid, total urea, total creatinine and significantly (P0.01) decreased liver total lipids content, total cholesterol and total triglycrides compared with diabetic rats control. In contrast, the treated diabetic rats with ethano lic extract had the highest total soluble proteins and cholesterol-HDL. The activities of aspartate and alanine transaminoferases were significantly (P0.01) higher in diabetic rats than in control rats. Ethanolic extract of Tpolium readjusted the activities of transaminoferases as approximately in control rats. However, petroleum ether extract (600 mg /kg b.w.) of T polium aerial parts didn't possess any significant (P0.01) effects on aforementioned parameters_ From HPLC analysis of these extracts, it was noticed that the ethanolic extract contained hydroquinone, rutin, pyrogallic acid and the gallic acid (20.91°/., 14.59'/., 12.02 % and 11.03`/0, respectively) as major compounds which may be owing to these effects- On the other hand, luteolin was identfied as major compound (37.09%) in petroleum ether extract.
