Analysis of milk urea and milk citrate content during the pospartal period and their impact on reproduction in dairy cows

The aim of this study was to evaluate milk urea and milk citrate concentrations during the first nine weeks of lactation and to determine their impact on the length of the interval from parturition to the onset of ovarian activity and the calving to the first service interval. Milk samples were collected every week from 27 Holstein (H) and Czech Fleckvieh (C) cows. Progesterone concentrations were evaluated in order to determine days to the first luteal response postpartum. The average onset of luteal activity and the length of calving to the first service interval were 26.83 and 65.32 days, resp., for H cows, and 25.75 and 57.31 days, resp., for C cows. In both breeds the lowest urea conc. was found in the first week of lactation, the highest urea conc. in the 9th week, whereas the citric acid conc. was the highest in the first five weeks of lactation. The onset of luteal activity is influenced by the citric acid conc. in the 3rd and 5th week of lactation. The length of calving to the first service interval was influenced by the urea conc.
