Verification of the food supply to game under conditions of the floodplain forest ecosystem

The aim of this study was to evaluate the food supply for red deer, fallow deer and roe deer in the region of the Soutok Game Preserve, Zidlochovice Forest Enterprise, Lanzhot Forest District, Czech Republic. Sample plots (n=360, 1 x 1 m) were laid out in a forest stand of an area of 1,796.49 ha. In total, forest and non-forest land provided 14,659,851 kg of grass and herb biomass. The biomass production was 6,826,662 kg in the forest (on average 380 g/square m) and 7,833,189 kg on meadows and pastures (on average 1,470 g/square m). Laboratory analyses of naturally dried-up biomass samples were carried out. The available energy of grass and herb biomass amounted to 5.7 MJ/kg, the utilizable energy of woody biomass amounted to 4.03 MJ/kg. In conclusion, the available feed supply for game mammals was sufficient.
