Growth and survival rate of crossbred dairy calves reared under full suckling and bucket feeding systems

Rearing record of 106 calves during year 2003 and 2004 under suckling and bucket feeding system was used. Although, bucket feeding system is preferred for large-scale calf rearing. Calf growth rates at 3 and 6 months of age was markedly higher (P0.05) for calves born during year 2003 and for calves reared under suckling system. There was no marked difference in calf growth rate between males and females up to 6 moths of age. Calf mortality rates were 4% and 9%, and 3% and 10% for calves born during year 2003 and 2004 and for calves reared under suckling bucket-feeding system, respectively. For smallholder farms rearing crossbred female calves on suckling is more advantageous in calf growth and survival rates.
