Roles of communities in forestry activity: the case of Antsokia-Gemza

Antsokia-Gemza is found in North Shoa zone. This area was once covered with forests and now it is a highly deforested and degraded area. The increasing population and falling agricultural production have been the main causes of the deforestation of the forests, as a growing number of people search for new agricultural land. The link between people and trees calls for a major revision of traditional forestry policies (centrally managed-top down approaches) to participatory approaches where people participate from planning through to evaluation of forestry activities. In 1994, the government of Ethiopia declared that the sustainable utilization of the country's forest resources is possible through the participation of the people and benefit sharing by the concerned communities. In the study area forestry activities include nursery activities (private and communal), planting trees (private and communal area closures (planting trees in the closure area and protecting them) and maintaining the existing forests. To carry out these forestry activities there are four actors working together (Office of Agriculture, World vision, woreda peasant associations and the communities). This paper attempts to see when and how (forms of contribution) people participate in the forestry activities, who selects the species to be planted, and what are the roles of the four actors. For the purpose of attaining the above-mentioned attempts, primary and secondary data were collected. Primary data was collected using interviews (with organizations in the area and Kebeles) and a sample survey was conducted.
